Make-up kit must haves in 2015 (Basics edition)

Even if you’re not a pro makeup artist, and you’re just starting to get the hang of this whole “makeup thing,” then this post is for you. When starting your makeup kit you want to look for beauty items that are easy to work with, economical, and versatile. Here are the makeup items every woman needs to add to her kit in 2015:

laura mercier

My recommendation: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer/ Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream

Find yourself a good BB cream that works for your skin type and add it to your makeup kit. BB creams work well on any skin type especially if you’re not a pro at blending foundation.

BB cream is easier to use than foundation, and its pretty easy to blend. You can rub it in with your hands alone, which is almost like you’re applying lotion to your face. Some BB creams even have SPF and are waterproof which is good for just a little extra coverage if you’re going to the beach/outdoors. [It] also has buildable coverage, which means, if one day you want some extra glam, just add two layers of BB cream and it will almost give you a full coverage foundation effect. Overall, I love BB creams  because they are versatile and is a must-have for every beginner makeup kit.

♥ My recommendation: MAC lipstick in Twig/Amorous

You want to have an “Everyday” lipstick in your makeup kit. One that you can rock to work or school and that is glam enough to wear to a wedding or function. For me, MAC lipstick in Twig or Amorous gives me that versatility. Find a nude color that compliments your skin tone, one that you can blend into any outfit or any eye look. Some nudes are too pale on certain skin tones, and others are too dark. Find one that it looks like you’re wearing lipstick but not really. (Click here to see my fav MAC lipsticks right now)

oil saps

My recommendation: Clean & Clear Hello Kitty Oil Absorbing sheets

Blotting paper is another make-up kit essential, especially if you have oily or combination skin. These ones particularly by Clean & Clear does a really good job at absorbing all the excess oil throughout the day. They lightweight, so its good to throw in your kit or even your purse and just whip it out whenever you need a touch-up.

My recommendation: ELF Powder brushReal Techniques Buffing brush

(Click the name to see where to buy it) When it comes to choosing a brush that you must put in your kit, these are by far my favorite brushes because of their versatility. I am not the kind of girl to have a hundred types of brushes in my bag, but I will have one that does practically everything. These brushes are by far my most used brushes as the shape of the brush allows it to apply foundation, apply blush, concealer, setting powder.. anything you want, a flat top kabuki/buffing brush can do.

5. MASCARA (mini)

♥ My recommendation: Too Faced Better than Sex mascara (mini)

Mascara is a beauty essential as it can add dimension to any eye look, whether night or day, work or school. It makes the eye pop, and it can do things to your face that no other beauty item can do. I carry around a mini mascara in my makeup kit, mostly because of the size. This mascara in particular is great for top and bottom lashes, and with just one coat you can see great results, so theres no need to take around 100 mascaras, this one does the trick. It saves time, money and space in your kit.

♥ My recommendation: EOS lip balm

Lip balm is definitely a must-have, for obvious reasons. You want to find a lip balm that is free of harmful chemicals, but moisturizing to your lips. EOS lip balm is particularly my fav, because its a Shea butter base, which is really moisturizing and doesn’t have all that harmful chemicals they put in makeup. You always want to make sure that your lips are well-moisutized, especially before applying lipstick.

♥ My recommendation: Wet n’Wild Trio- Walking on Eggshells

There are tons of neutral palettes out there, but this one has always been my favorite. I can’t get over how cute it is firstly, it fits in almost everything. The range of colors is really good because it has a champagne color (base), a darker color (crease), and a pearl color (highlight). This palette is very versatile and is good for any occasion. You can even double up and use the pearl color to highlight your face and the darker color to fill in your eyebrows. It even comes with a double-sided applicator, which is good for any beginner.

♥ My recommendation: ELF High Definition Powder

This is by far my favorite all round setting powder. The versatility of this product is incomparable. I use it to set my under eye concealer as well as to set my foundation. I add a little to my eye lids, even if I haven’t applied primer, and it works just as efficient. It holds your makeup in place and it works well with oily/combo skin types as it takes away the shine. It doesn’t add color to your face, so it just sets and mattifies the foundation or whatever you’ve applied to your face.

elf blush

♥ My recommendation: ELF Shimmer sheets

Blush sheets are more convenient than taking around a blush palette or a blushing powder. The sheets won’t break and mess up your purse, its handy so you can just throw in your purse without having to find a blush brush. Its compact and easy to use as you can just swipe it on your cheek and head out the door. You can even use it as a eye shadow if you wanted to. All round, the ease of this product over a blush powder makes it a beauty item that every woman should have in her kit.

♥ My recommendation: ELF Brow Kit

Beauty items such as these are versatile and easy to use. It comes with an easy to use applicator, which makes filling your brows a breeze. There is a gel and a powder, and it comes in different shades. You can sculpt your brows using the gel first, then you set them in place with the powder. This retails for about $3-5USD which is actually quite a steal. If you’re just getting started with shaping and filling your brows, then this is the perfect starter kit.

What are some of your beauty items that would make it to this list?

At some point we all get bored of drinking plain ol’ water, so this is the perfect way to revamp your water game and help get rid of fat all at the same time. What you will need:

– 1 pitcher

– 4 strawberries

– 1 lemon (sliced)

– 1 c ACV (apple cider vinegar)

– 1-2 dashes of cinamon

– water

Slice strawberries and lemon, and add to pitcher. Fill pitcher with water to desired amount and then add ACV and cinnamon, and chopped fruits. Allow to steep overnight, then discard lemon in the morning. You can change the water, but store only up to 4-5 days.

Drink one glass upon waking up.

This will not only promote digestive health but it will clear your skin, cleanse your digestive tract as well as help you in your weight loss journey. Since I have been drinking this fruit-infused water, I’ve noticed a huge difference in the my stomach area as well as I don’t look as bloated anymore.

I hope you enjoy this post on how you can help shed the extra pounds.

Tips on growing long hair

For a while, I thought that my hair was not growing. I would straighten it and it would be the same length as it was the month before. It was frustrating, until I found some products and tips that have allowed my hair to grow drastically in the last 6 months. Here are they:

Fun fact: Your hair can grow 0.5 inches a month and up to 6 inches per year, depending on your genetics of course.

1. Stop using heat

This is a major hinderance to hair growth. Too much heat can damage your hair follicles and dry your hair causing any new growth to snap right off after a while. Cut back on the amount of times you blow dry or use a straighter in your hair. Opt for air drying your hair or using the cool setting if you must. Try doing the ‘no heat’ challenge and watch your hair grow.

2. Weekly hair treatments/masks

Every week you should pamper your hair by doing a hot oil treatment or a deep treatment. We do a lot of things to our hair everyday, so its refreshing once a week to add back the moisture that was lost throughout the week by heat, wind, hair products, towel drying etc. and give your hair a fresh start. My favorite hair mask of all time is the Macadamia Deep Repair Hair Masque. Honestly, this is the best hair masque out there for an overall hair boost. It has repaired my spilt ends, and my dry brittle hair. If you’re on a budget, my favorite DIY hair mask is my Protein-Power Hair Mask (1 egg | 2 tbsp mayo | 1 tbsp honey | 1 tbsp olive/almond/coconut oil). Our hair is made of protein so its only fitting that we add it back for more shine and healthier hair. If you’re looking for an easier way to repair your hair, you can try my favorite hot oil treatment (2 tbsp olive oil/coconut oil – heated). All these DIYs you can leave overnight or for as little as 20 minutes, with a shower cap for a deeper treatment.

3. Shampoo/Conditioner

Try to limit your shampooing to once a week, let the hair generate its own natural oils which adds moisture back into your hair. Shampooing can strip the hair of its natural oils, causing it to be dry and brittle. If your hair is moisturized, it will grow faster. My favorite shampoo for some time now is the SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo. This shampoo is sulfate-free and is made with natural and certified organic ingredients. Coconut Oil hydrates and protects hair while reducing breakage. Silk Protein smoothes hair for a soft, silky feel. Neem Oil controls frizz while adding brilliant shine.

Conditioner is also very important in your hair regimen as it adds back the moisture lost from shampooing. My favorite condish at the moment is the Garnier Fructis’ Triple Nutrition Conditioner, which has Avocado, Olive and Almond Oil, all of which are great for hair growth. After two weeks of use, I’ve noticed good results especially with the ends of my hair, it was no longer as dry, and healthy ends = healthy hair = fast hair growth.

4. Detangle your hair regularly

Some people overlook this step because its too tedious and its easier to throw it in a pony or top knot when you’re in a rush. Detangling/Brushing your hair will not only take the knots out but its good way to stimulate hair follicles, which ultimately will promote growth. I normally comb out my hair twice a week, using a paddle brush with some type of conditioner or hair treatment in my hair. I do it like this so that my hair is easier to comb through without it snapping off.

5. Supplements/Diet/Lifestyle

There are tons of hair growth potions on the market, some of them I wouldn’t even bother wasting my money. I’ve experimented with some hair growth supplements before, however I have found that Biotin works best for me, with no symptoms. I take my 5000mcg of Biotin once a day at breakfast every other month, so that I can give my body a rest from it ever so often. This has been proven to promote faster hair growth, given your genetics of course. Diet is also very important to hair growth. If your body isn’t getting all the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs, it can reflect in your hair. Protein is necessary to hair, skin and nail health, so ensure that you are getting quality and adequate protein. Stress can also cause your hair to grow at a slower pace or break off. You want to live a stress-free life, knowing that God holds your future, there’s no need to worry (Jeremiah 29:11).

6. Protective Styling

You’re not Pocahontas, tie your hair up in a top knot or braid it most of the time. If you continue to have your hair out regularly, the wind can cause it to get tangled, and its going to be a spilt end party. Wearing top knots or doing styles that ensure your ends are covered are the best ways to repair your hair or keep it from breaking. Wearing two protective hairstyles (click for examples), daily for one month, will pump shine and health back into your strands.

7. Regular scalp massages

Just before I comb or shampoo my hair, I would put some almond oil on my fingertips and massage my scalp in a circular motion. This also stimulates the hair follicles which will promote hair growth. You can use olive or coconut oil, but I find that almond oil works best for everyday use as its a lighter oil, so you don’t get a lot of product buildup.

I hope you enjoyed these seven ways that I use to promote hair growth. What are some things that you do to grow your hair? Comment below.

If you’ve tried any of these, comment or take a pic with the #thatkhadineproject

With love,

Healthier Fast Food Survival guide

Who says that you can’t eat healthy all the time? Healthy is not a diet, which only lasts for a week or a month–its a lifestyle. It is reflected in the choices you make when your at the grocery or caught at a fast food restaurant, or a night out with friends etc…In the spirit of Challenge #5, (click here if you don’t know what Im taking about), these are some of my healthier options/tips if you’re buying fast food.

1. McDonalds- Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich (300 cals, 27g protein, 3.5g fat, 41g carbs, 730mg sodium)

Customized with extra lettuce, tomato and not adding mayo, it saves you 6g of fat and 50 calories and of course with more vegetables, its healthier. Don’t just look at the calories, look at the calories, fat, sodium, carbs, and protein numbers as well. The Grilled Chicken Snack Wrap is another healthier option at McDonalds, maybe with a side of fruit and walnuts.

Veggie option: If you are vegetarian, or just looking for a vegetarian option. McDonalds offers Premium Salads as well. There is the Premium Southwest Salad without chicken or cheese (110 calories, 5g protein, 2.5g fat, 19g carbs, 90mg sodium) and topped with their low fat Balsamic vinaigrette is a healthier option than ranch or caesar dressing. Their salads contain, Iceberg Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, Spring Mix (May Contain Baby Red Romaine, Baby Green Romaine, Baby Red Leaf, Baby Green Leaf, Baby Red Swiss Chard, Baby Red Oak, Baby Green Oak, Parella, Lolla Rosa, Tango, Totsoi, Arugula, Mizuna, Radicchio, Frisee), Carrots.

2. Subway- Subway is the better “fast food” alternative as it contains carbs, protein and veggies so we can be a little more lenient but still pay close attention to the details when making your sub. 1) Get a 6″ or salad instead. 2) Make sure the bread is whole grain, like the whole wheat or honey oat. 3) Add most, if not all of the vegetables, you can skip the pickles or jalapeños as it can add extra sodium. 4) Watch out for the sauces and cheeses, they can add hundreds of calories to your meal without you even realizing. Opt for the olive oil, mustard or even shadow beni sauces instead. 5) Skip the chips and skip the soda, ask for a free cup to get water instead or even a unsweetened ice tea will do.

6” Sandwiches – Healthier Options:

Veggie Delite®
290 cal, 3.5g sat fat, 7.5g total fat, 505mg sodium, 5g fiber, 12g protein

Oven Roasted Chicken
380 cal, 5.5g sat fat, 9.5g total fat, 845mg sodium, 5g fiber, 27g protein

Turkey Breast
340 cal, 4.0g sat fat, 8g total fat, 1,005mg sodium, 5g fiber, 22g protein

Roast Beef
380 cal, 4.5g sat fat, 9.5g total fat, 935mg sodium, 5g fiber, 30g protein

3. Burger King- Tendergrill Chicken sandwich (no mayo) (320 calories, 5g fat/1g saturated fat, 750mg sodium, 38g carbs, 31g protein)

Also customized with added lettuce, no cheese or mayo, this sandwich is lower in sodium and fat than most of their sandwiches/burgers. Watch out for those “combo-grenades”, they are silent but deadly. A small pack of fries can add an extra 340 calories, 450mg sodium, 15g fat to your meal, and opt for water instead of soda/juice.

Veggie option: Believe it or not, BK offers veggie burgers which aren’t bad without mayo (320 calories, 8g fat, 840mg sodium, 43g carbs, 21g protein.) There are not many meatless salads at BK, but there is the Side Ceasar Salad and Side Garden Salad with healthier dressing options like Honey Balsamic and Apple Cider Vinaigrette, hold the croutons please.

4. Wendy’s- Grilled Chicken Breast (130 calories, 1.5g fat, 470mg sodium, 3g carbs, 27g protein), Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe- without mayo (300 calories, 13g fat, 800mg sodium, 27g carbs, 17g protein)  or Ultimate Chicken Grill-without sauce (330 calories, 3.5g fat), or Apple Pecan Chicken Salad: full-sized salad, no blue cheese (330 calories, 11g fat, 570mg sodium, 32g carbs, 30g protein).

Veggie option: Garden Side salad with no croutons can cost you about 20 calories, 0g fat, 30mg sodium, 4g carbs, 1g protein. Its not very fulling but it can get the job done. Some healthier dressings from Wendy’s would be Pomegranate Vinaigrette, Light Classic Ranch, and Fat Free French.

5. The Cross (Trinidad)- Chimichangas, Corn Soup

Chimichangas is a healthier alternative to gyros and burgers which are high in fat and sodium. Corn soup has vegetables, carbs and protein which is a great “fast food” alternative.

What are some of your healthier fast food restaurants and what do you get there?

5 MAC products I cannot live without

I know finding the right products at MAC that actually works will require a lot of money and time. When I had only dream about wearing MAC makeup, I didn’t know what to buy or how to even ask the makeup artists what I wanted. Thus, I’ve compiled a list of MAC products that I simply adore that is not overrated and worth the cost. These are really the products I cannot skip in my makeup routine. What’s your MAC must-haves?

1. MAC Paint Pot in Painterly ($21USD)

I absolutely adore this product. I have to admit, I only bought it because of the hype. After using it for the first time, I fell in love. This is a multi-use product; I use it to make sure my entire eyelid is one color before I put on eye shadow. It keeps the eye shadow from creasing and keeps your eye shadow in place all day (trust me, I’ve tried it).

2. MAC PREP+PRIME Skin Refined Zone Treatment ($22USD)

*Sings* I have big pores and I cannot lie. Every time I wear makeup, I end up seeing my pores first and then my makeup. A MAC MUA referred this product to me for people with big pores. I used this just before I put my makeup on the areas where my pores show the most (T-zone), and it has tremendously helped. It also will mattify your face, so is good for oily skin. I even prefer this to the Benefit POREfessional, which I used for several years. All round, this product is a savior, especially if you live in humid areas.

3. MAC PREP+PRIME Highlighter in Peach Lustre ($26USD)

Seriously, I cannot live without this product! If you have hyperpigmentation, then you need to get this product. It cancels out the grey/dark areas around your eyes and mouth and sometimes, I wouldn’t even add concealer. If you want to conceal your under eye circles or simply even your skin tone, then this is the highlighter for you. I use this under my foundation and my skin looks flawless.

4. MAC Mineralized Skin Finish in Global Glow ($32USD)

This by far is the best highlighter I have EVER used. I would always see these girls on Instagram with their highlighter on fleek (leave that word in 2014), and I could never get mine to look like that without looking like a walking glitter glue. It has gold and bronze pigments with hints of champagne. This highlighter will compliment any skin tone and I seriously wear it everyday—it’s that amazing!

Everyone raves about the Fix+ Spray, and I’m about to rave about it again. This. Spray. Is. Amazing! I’m not sure which I love more, the smell or the multi-uses of this spray. I use Fix+ for almost everything in my makeup routine. To intensify eye shadow colors, mostly metallic colors, before and after I put makeup on, or added to my foundation to look more dewy. All in all, it is a great multi-use product that works amazing and is worth the hype. And well, it smells like roses.

6. MAC Studio Finish Concealer ($19USD)

I know I said 5, but I could not help but mention this concealer. I am a NC45 and this has been the best concealer that I’ve tried so far. It really does a good job at hiding my under eye circles. It has yellow undertones, along with the consistency of this concealer makes it perfect to use on the top or under your brows and under my eyes or even on my lids. It’s does not prevent your eye shadow from creasing, if its one thing it might make it crease. So use it with a primer or Paint Pot if you’re gonna use it to even your eye lids.
