NUDE MAC lipsticks for medium-dark, dark skin tones

I wear a nude/mauve lip almost everyday and for every occasion (see Instagram), that is,  if I’m not wearing Heroine (MAC). So I’m always in search of the next best nude, especially for my skin tone. I love nude lippies, I think its so versatile and easy to wear but I always have to be careful not to look like I’m dead or used chalk as lipstick, as nudes are so close to my skin tone.

If you are a medium, medium deep or deep skin tone, you should stick with more mauve shades of nude instead of the light brown nudes. Mauve tends to flatter warmer skin tones as it picks up the pink/orange undertones in the skin. If you can’t find the perfect nude lippie, or just looking for an everyday lipstick, then keep reading…

Fun facts about MAC Lipsticks:

– all are $17USD, $135 TTD

– long-wearing (especially with a lipliner underneath)

– highly-pigmented

– moisturizing

– over 186 shades

1. Mehr- (dirty blue pink) this is a matte lipstick but its very moisturizing. The color is really amazing and can be worn everyday like all of these lipsticks. It is similar to “Twig” from MAC which has been my favorite for some years now.

2. Up the Amp (lavender violet) I am falling in love with this color more and more every time I wear it. Its amazing because at a glance it looks purple, but it really just gives a different gradient of mauve to me. I love this color, I wouldn’t use it for everyday, but I sure can use it to spice up any look for any occasion.

3. Cosmo- (pink coco) this is my least favorite of the 5. I think it’s a little lighter than expected, but its workable. It doesn’t make your lips look like chalk trust me. It gives an amplified finish, and I would not wear it everyday, though it is quite flattering.

4. Verve-  (muted brownish-plum) I am blown away by this lipstick. It is just perfect. I was getting tired of the same shades of nude/mauve but this is a must-have. Its a perfect balance between dark and nude. I love love love this color. I think it would also pair beautifully with Stone lipliner from MAC.

5. Fast play- (neutral pink) this is very comparable to ‘Amorous’ from MAC. It’s a deeper shade of mauve but I would so wear this everyday, or on those days where I just want to look different. What’s best about this color, is that it can be paired with any color and any skin tone. It looks flattering on NC 42-NC 50 skin tones and it gives a nice satin finish.

Which of these do you like? Did your favorite MAC lippies make the list?

Healthy Protein Tri-Berry muffins

Muffins is one of those versatile foods that save you time and money. I packed these with antioxidants (berries) and protein so it keeps you full longer. These are soooo delicious, I have literally made them once a week for the last three weeks. The best part about these muffins is that you can personalize them, its healthy and you can have them anytime of the day you like. When these babies are in the oven, your kitchen will smell divine.

I’m really excited for this recipe, can you tell 🙂 Here’s what you’ll need:

Serves 12

MACROS per muffin: 64 cals | 6g carbs | 3g fat | 4g protein

Adapted from The Barefoot Contessa

〉 1½ cups all-purpose flour (I use oat flour, but any flour of your choice)
〉 1½ tsp. baking powder (I use Clabber Girl gluten free baking powder)
〉 ¼ tsp. baking soda
〉 ¼ tsp. sea salt
〉 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
〉 ½ cup brown organic sugar (or honey/agave/maple syrup)

〉 1 cup mixed berries (fresh or frozen)

〉 1 scoop Shredz Protein- Blueberry Muffin (or any vanilla protein powder)*

〉 ¾ cup Almond milk
〉 1 egg
〉 1 stick unsalted butter, melted
〉 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Feel free to add pecans, walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, or a ripe banana as well.

1. Preheat oven to 375ºF.

2. Place muffin liners in tray or coat try with any cooking spray.

3. Sift flour or blend oats to make oat flour. Add protein powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and sugar together to flour in a large bowl. Stir with a whisk to combine.

4. In another bowl, combine the milk, lightly beaten eggs, butter and vanilla.

5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, and stir until combined. Don’t over mix the batter. Fold in the blueberries, raspberries and strawberries.

6. Spoon batter into the muffin cups. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean and the tops are nicely browned.

N.B. If you are using frozen berries, make sure not to thaw the berries. If its hard to break apart, allow to defrost for a couple minutes but not all the way through. Don’t let too much of the liquid from the berries to get into the batter.

If you tried this recipe, snap a pic with #thatkhadineproject. I love hearing from you.

Berry Melon smoothie

Its been a while since I’ve posted a smoothie recipe, which is weird because its summer and summer means smoothie season. 🙂 Moving on…I looked around my kitchen and saw what fruits I had on hand so this is what I came up with, its delicious and refreshing. You will need:

〉 3 cups watermelon

〉 2 cups spinach (or kale)

〉 1 cup berries (I used mixed berries)

〉 1 scoop Shredz Blueberry Muffin protein powder (optional)

Blend watermelon and spinach first, then add berries and protein powder. Blend until smooth.

TKP TIP: There’s no need to add water as the watermelon blended will add liquid to the mixture. However, if you want to add some coconut water you can.

If you’ve tried out this recipe please let me know by using the hashtag #thatkhadineproject or comment below.

Review: June beauty favorites

I have been obsessed with these products lately, so I just had to share them with you. These products have made my makeup routine easier and it’s worth the money.

1. Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation ($39USD)

My shade: Tan Deep Honey

YAY: The best part about this foundation is that it provides sun protection, it has buildable coverage and it feels very light weight. It has non-chemical sunscreen filters and fragrance free so it is great for those with acne or acne prone skin. It also provides a powdery finish for normal to oily skin. And because of its buildable coverage, I wear it as a BB cream as well as a full coverage foundation. The most popular shades are Fair, Ivory (both excellent for very light skin tones), Light, Tan, and Tan Deep. Light Medium is slightly peach while Medium has a yellow tinge that requires careful inspection in daylight to ensure it matches well. The darkest shade (Deep) is slightly orange but you can work around it. This is a must-have.

NAYIt is pricey; sometimes it can be difficult to blend

2. Artist Couture by Angel Merino in Mermaid Fantasy ($26.99USD)

YAY: This shade is one of the best highlighters I have ever seen. Its turquoise shimmer gives it its unique look. It is long-wearing and the shimmer can be intensified by Fix + spray. I also use this as an eyeshadow as well. The color is payoff is great and a little goes a long way.

NAY: It is pricey for a small amount

3. MakeupGeek Eyeshadow pan in Mermaid ($5.99USD)

mermaidtb withflash

YAY: I can’t begin to express how much I love MUG eyeshadows in general and Mermaid is no exception. The quality is amazing, and it looks good on any skin tone. It’s so creamy and can be intensified with Fix +.

NAY: You would need a Z palette for an e/s pan

4. Anastasia Beverly Hills contour refill in Carob ($14USD)

YAY: I had been searching for the perfect contour shade for medium to dark skin tones without that muddy look. This refill is not only the perfect shade but it is long wearing and a little goes a long way.

NAY: You would need a palette to store the refills

5. LA GIRL Pro Conceal in Orange ($5USD)

YAY: These PRO Conceals are very much comparable to the Prolong wear concealers. It is full coverage and very creamy. This corrector in particular, helps get rid of hyperpigmentation and dark circles, and a little does go a long way because it is very pigmented.

NAY: The packaging can sometimes make you lose a lot of product

6. Smashbox Photo Finish primer ($36USD)

YAY: This primer is life!! It really keeps your makeup on all night, tried and tested! It also creates such a smooth base which makes makeup easy to apply. It doesn’t clog your pores like some primers and isn’t oily. It works especially for rough skin textures.

NAY: It’s pricey

7. MAC sized to go pigment in Rose ($10USD)

YAY: These pigments are out of this world pigmented and the specs of gold and rose gold throughout this pigment is insane. I only use a little at a time and it goes along way. It works just for a pop of color and is great for prom and special events. Depending on the angle and lighting, you might see several colors coming out of this one pigment. I also love this cute size because I can take it everywhere and it fits snug in my kit.

NAY: Pigments can be a little messy

8. The makeup bulle($14.95)

YAY: This product is a must-have for makeup artists as well as makeup enthusiasts on the go. It blends from cream to powder in an instant and because it fits snug on your finger, it makes getting hard to reach corners, easier. The texture of the bullet is similar to the Beauty Blender so you know the quality is great. You just pop it on your finger and blend. The size is also pretty universal so no need to worry. Quick and simple; the price isn’t too bad either considering you would have it for a long time.

NAY: You may need to dampen it a bit to blend creams

9. House of Lashes in Siren ($9USD)

YAY: HOS lashes have awesome quality because they’re made with 100% human hair. It’s so wispy and flirty but at the same time it looks really natural. You can wear these for any occasion and with the right glue, it lasts all night long. #LASHGAMESTRONG

NAY: For lashes, they can be pricey, but it’s worth it trust me

10. Urban Decay All-Nighter Makeup Setting Spray ($30USD)

YAY: I saved the best for last. OMG, THIS IS THE BEST SETTING SPRAY EVER!!! I used this for the first time at 2pm, I went outdoors until 7pm and then went to a concert and got home at 2am and makeup didn’t crease and I didn’t look oily at all. I was so surprised because not even my Fix + spray or Model in a Bottle does that. This spray is amazing and I would highly recommend it.

NAY: The price, but its totally worth every penny

I hope you enjoyed my June favorites, comment below which are your favs or anything you would like me to review next…

How to always be on time

So we all know the struggle of getting ready and out the door yet making it to work or school on time. I know for me, every morning is a struggle so I came up with some tips and tricks to help you always be on time and make your mornings a little less stressful.

1. Set alarms to help you stay on track

We all know how quickly time goes in the morning. You think you have an hour and then after making breakfast, its like you have 10 minutes left. So, set an alarm for the time you should be leaving the house and then another at midpoint to that time so that you would know how much time you have left. So basically its like three alarms; 1) to wake up, 2) midpoint to leaving the house and 3) the time you should be leaving the house. I know its a lot but it has helped me stay on track and thus, you’d always be on time.

2. Meal prep

Meal prep is so crucial not only because you want to be healthy but it can help you save money and time as well. There are several options for meal prep, you can choose to prep on Sunday for the week or every night for the following day, whichever is more convenient for you. You can even do both Sunday and midway through the week. Its up to you.

My favorite food thats healthy and on-the-go is shakes. I make a lot of protein shakes especially and its so simple and quick and its healthy and makes you feel satisfied. My favorite recipe is to throw some milk (almond), 1 scoop of protein powder and some almond or peanut butter in a cup and shake it and there you go. You have a great meal that will keep you till about 10am or even lunch time.

Another great option is salad in a jar, you can chop up vegetables of your choice, toss it in a jar with some salad dressing and you’re out the door. Some other convenient options include: frozen vegetables, salmon burgers, or even boiled eggs which you can leave to boil on a medium to low heat as you are getting ready. Try investing in a pill organizer or just any container for vitamins and pack them with your multi vitamins or supplements, leave it in your bag so you won’t forget to take them.

3. Clothes prep

As we all know ladies, it can take forever to find something to wear on mornings. And when you’re hustling to get out the door, finding an outfit is the last thing you need to be doing. I think I spend the longest time trying to choose what to wear and if I prepared what I was wearing from the night before or even the Sunday before (ambitious much?) when I’m doing meal prep, that would eliminate the time wasted in the morning trying to find matching pants or shirt.

TIP: Invest in dresses for work as it is the easiest outfit to put together, keep it professional of course 🙂

4. FIVE minute Makeup routine

Now, I know you might be saying, “girl, I don’t have time to do my makeup in the morning.” And I’ve been there, I don’t have much time myself. However, what if I told you that you can still have that Kim K glow and be on time for work? So firstly, you need to watch your face, do it right now…I’ll give you a minute. Okay, minute over. See what is important for you to do. For me, I need to hide my under eye circles and my eyebrows is a must. There are some key steps that we cannot afford to skip no matter what the occasion. Our eye brows frame our face, it can make you look like you put in all this effort and you really didn’t. So for me, I focus on hiding my under eye circles and doing my eye brows. I can afford to skip foundation, eyeshadow, and winged liner. So it takes me little to no time to put my peach corrector on my dark spots and then dab some concealer over it, blend and the skin is done. I fill in my eyebrows with eyebrow powder and then fill the gaps with a pencil and that’s done. I pop on mascara and I can put my lipstick on in the car. And that’s that. Ten minutes max. There’s no need to be extra with your makeup, keep it fresh and simple.

TIP: If you can’t seem to get this in 10 or so minutes, pack a makeup bag and do your makeup at work.

5. Hair routine

If you have curly hair or unmanageable hair then this step is for you. The key to getting your hair done quickly on mornings is prep. I wear the same styles to work every day, I keep it professional yet stylish. I do a top knot almost every day and before bed, I would make sure to style it in the way I would for the next day so in the morning all I have to do is brush or refresh the curls and I’m out the door.

TIP: You can also try styling your hair and then putting a satin bonnet or wrap over it the night before.

The key to being on time is prep and keeping your routine short, simple yet effective.

I hope these tips help you to be on time and ease your morning routines whether you are a homemaker or a professional.

5 ways to be happy

Have you ever felt like you needed a ‘happiness boost’? Sometimes life can suck the joy right out of you. Either you’re too busy to enjoy life, or you’ve been hurt. Here’s some easy and practical ways you can use to boast your happiness (read till the end):

1. Spiritual health- though its often overlooked, this is the most important key to your happiness. Listen to videos or music that uplifts your spirit. My favorite video right now is Joyce Meyer’s Nine Attitudes that Will Keep You happy (click). Go to church, find a ministry that you enjoy, feed your spirit with Godly things and watch it grow. I know you probably saw the word ‘church’ and said, ‘uhhh no!’ and so many people have been hurt by the church, but hey! we go for God, not church members.

2. Loving yourself- Health is more than green juices and working out. It is about loving yourself enough to care about your wellbeing. Start a journal, where you write down your thoughts everyday. Journal how you feel, what you learned from spending time with God. Try journaling things that you’ve noticed you like and don’t like, your pet peeves, what makes you, YOU! Loving yourself is a whole other blog post, but you deserve to be loved and don’t let anyone make you feel differently. Also, love yourself with what you put in your body. If you love something, you’d want to take care of it, treat it right. And if you’re saying, well I don’t even love myself well write on your mirror that God never created something that He didn’t love. And if the maker of the universe loves you, then forget what anyone else says about you or what has happened to you, LOVE YOU. You are more loved than you know, so love yourself back.

3. Diet/Exercise/Lifestyle- Of course you knew this was coming. You’re probably unhappy because of what you’re eating, which sounds crazy but its true. You are what you eat! And if you eat whole foods, you’ll feel whole, if you eat foods that give no life, guess what? You’ll feel the same. Junk food will only promote temporary ‘happiness’ but in the end can leave you feeling sluggish and regretful. If you want happiness that’s long lasting, then change the way you eat. It doesn’t have to be drastic, but it can start with steaming instead of frying, or baked/grilled chicken instead of fried or stewed. It can also mean that you’re smoking one less cigarette a day or drinking less and less. When you’re in good health, you feel happy and energized. YOU deserve to be healthy!

4. Rid yourself of toxic people- Get rid of people that are toxic to your growth and development. Focus on keeping people around you that uplift you and support your dreams and goals, no matter how bizarre they might appear. Its okay to loose a couple friends along the way and you’re not holding any grudges either, you’re just taking care of you. Toxic friends can suck the life right out of you. If your friends are encouraging you to drink after explaining to them that you want to stop–GET RID OF THEM. If they’re encouraging you to stay in a toxic relationship, GET…It sounds harsh, but you got to take care of YOU boo.

5. Do things that make you happy- find what makes you happy firstly, and make sure its something that it is positive. Eating pizza or shopping does not apply here as its neither healthy nor economical (sadly). If writing makes you happy then write away, if working out makes you feel happy, then do that. Find hobbies that are beneficial to you. Walks on the beach or park, get creative. It doesn’t have to be something fancy or expensive. It can be just writing a bucket list or things you want to accomplish, or cooking or baking something healthy that you would never have tried before. It can be as simple as staring at the sky and thinking about things you’re grateful for. You only have one life, so start living on purpose. YOU deserve it.

The thing is, none of the aforementioned can make you feel true happiness unless you’re connected to the source of all joy, peace and happiness–Jesus. I’ve tried everything to make me feel happy, nothing is as effective as getting your joy from God. This way, no matter what happens to you, you’ll always be happy because God doesn’t change. He’ll always make you happy, day in and day out, even in the difficult times. No man, woman, hobby or food can do that. Your happiness is not conditional, its eternal once you’re connected to the source of all happiness.

Jesus is the root of happiness, the above mentioned are just the leaves on the tree, and your happiness is the fruit.

This has to be one of my greatest inventions yet! I was searching for a way to spice up my breakfast routine of eggs, green smoothies and oats but something that wouldn’t leave me starving by 10am. It always leads me to making some poor eating choices like sada roti or a panini or something thats no good. Here’s what you’ll need for this dream:
Chia pudding tier:2015-05-19 10.48.17

– 1/2 c Chia seeds

– 1 c Coconut Milk (or milk of choice)

– 1 tsp honey

Smoothie tier:

– 1/2 c strawberries (frozen)

– 1/2 banana  (frozen)

– 1 c mixed berries (frozen)

– 2 c Coconut Milk

1. Mix Chia seeds, honey and milk and leave in fridge overnight.

2. Next day, blend berries, banana and milk together and pour on top of chia pudding.

This is very easy to make and the best part is you can substitute these ingredients for whatever you got at home. If you happen to give this a try, please tweet or send me a picture on Instagram with the #thatkhadineproject

2015-04-25 15.39.21      2015-04-25 15.57.18

I was so excited to receive these eyeshadows in the mail. Kathleenlights is one of my favorite Youtubers as well as Colourpop is one of my favorite eyeshadows, so it was just perfect when they came together to create this foursome. Overall, I’m in love with these shadows, all of Colourpop super shock shadows are very pigmented, long-wearing and is very velvety, so it came as no shock that these were just the same. My favorite color from the collection is Kathleenlights, it is just gorgeous on any skin tone and flattering for any occasion. Here’s a review of these shadows, which might I add, is $5 for one, total of $20USD. I mean its a win-win situation. Click here to buy.

1. Kathleenlights– this pearlized color is the most gorgeous blend of bronze, copper and gold. I have worn it in the daytime as well as the night and it is flattering all round. This color can be worn everyday, bridal looks or for special occasions. A lot can be done with this color and I’m noticing that the more I experiment with it. As most of Colourpop Super Shock Shadows, it is better to be applied with your fingers as it gives better pay off that way. One swipe is all you need for this stunning color. The only thing I can say about this color is that it is an exact dupe for MAC “Amber Lights”, so I’m not sure if that was intentional or what. Although, I’m not complaining because Amber Lights is $16 and Kathleenlights is $5.

2015-04-25 15.50.54

2. Blaze– this is a metallic color, and as most metallics I have my reservations because of the tremendous fall outs and sensitivity to flash photography. HOWEVER, this shadow does not have much fall out but you do get some flashback, not a lot with flash photography. There are specs of silver sparkles in this shadow, it is a beautiful gold color. I do believe that this color is similar to “So Quiche” from Colorpop, So Quiche has more pink metallics and Blaze has silver metallics, but the base color is similar.

2015-04-25 15.53.22

3. Cornelious- this is such a perfect shade of taupe is not even funny. I would usually use taupe from the Lorac Pro palette, but this one has better pay off. I use it as a transition color, but it would be pretty as a base or even a lid color. Its super creamy but still maintains a matte finish.

2015-04-25 15.51.54

4. Glow- I think this is a really versatile color, I’ve never seen any color like it. Its like a great mixture between white and cream (like a creamy vanilla). Its great for the inner corner or base or my favorite, the brow bone. I think this color is too light for tan skin tones, however you can make it work. It is a matte shade but its creamy, and also whats great about it is its versatility.

2015-04-25 15.52.30

Overall, these eyeshadows are such a great buy as you can use it for any occasion. Golds and coppers are flattering on every skin tone so you wouldn’t have to worry about if it would look good on you. The packaging is not the best as its a bit bulky to store in your makeup kit, but if thats not an issue for you, then I’d highly recommend this foursome. Colourpop is one of the best shadows I’ve seen, other than Makeupgeek Cosmetics, and they’re a affordable and long wearing.

If you love this foursome as well, comment below 🙂
